Every hotel lobby in Cancún sells the same catamaran day to Isla Mujeres. It is not a bad product. But the maths on a private boat surprise most groups — and sometimes the catamaran really is the right call.
The two products, plainly
A catamaran tour is a shared boat — forty to well over a hundred people — sold per person on a fixed schedule with a fixed route: a snorkel stop, Playa Norte, a house open bar, the crew’s music and a return time you do not control, plus a van that collects you from your hotel after stopping at several others.
A private charter is your boat, sold per boat. With Zamá that is a Sea Ray Sundancer for up to fifteen, a captain and crew who work for your group only, a route built around what you want, and six hours that start when you say. It leaves from the marina in the hotel zone; you get there yourself.
The cost, honestly
Catamaran tours are priced per person and vary by operator and season — check current prices — but the shape of the maths is what matters. Take an illustrative $90 a person with open bar against $1,150 for the private boat:

So: for a couple or four people the catamaran is cheaper and it is not close. Around eight the gap shrinks to the price of a nice dinner each. At twelve the private boat is nearly the same money, and at fifteen it is cheaper than the shared one — for a boat that is yours. Two costs sit outside the table: the private charter has a 180-peso marina fee at the gate and no hotel pickup (a hotel-zone taxi is a few dollars); the catamaran usually includes the van and a house bar, while the private boat includes 24 waters, 24 sodas and 24 beers, snorkel gear for everyone, and lets you bring whatever else you like.
What you give up on each
On the catamaran you give up control: departure time, the length of each stop, the music, whether the boat goes near the good part of the reef or the quiet end of Playa Norte. You share the snorkel stop with everyone on board at once, and if your group is celebrating something, you celebrate it next to strangers celebrating something else. The hotel-van circuit adds an hour to each end of the day.
On the private yacht you give up the crowd — a real loss for some. The catamaran’s party energy, a hundred people and a DJ, is the product for a certain kind of group, particularly younger solo travellers who want to meet people. A private boat is quieter, and it is on you to make the party. It also asks a little more: getting to the marina, choosing add-ons, deciding what the day should be.
Who should book which
Book the catamaran if you are two to four on a budget, travelling solo and want the crowd, or would rather make no decisions that day. It is a well-run product and there is no shame in it.
Book the private boat if you are six or more; if the day is about something — a bachelorette, a birthday, a proposal, a reunion; if anyone in the group is nervous about crowds or motion; if you have children (a captain watching four kids is a different day from a crew watching ninety adults); or if you want the photographs — every aerial and bow shot on this site was taken on a private charter.
