Getting there
Isla Mujeres: on the water in under an hour
The island sits about 13 kilometres off Cancún — you can see it from the hotel-zone beaches. A private boat from Marina Mundo Marino has you anchored in the shallows in 35–45 minutes; the public ferry from Puerto Juárez takes about 25 minutes dock to dock. No highway, no transfer, and the crossing itself — water shifting from navy to glowing turquoise — is part of the day.
Cozumel: half a day of logistics
Cozumel is not practically reachable by boat from Cancún. The route is 60–75 minutes down the highway to Playa del Carmen, the walk to the pier, a 45-minute ferry, and the same in reverse. Door to door, expect two hours or more each way — four to five hours of a one-day trip in transit.

Snorkelling and diving
Cozumel wins underwater — for divers. Palancar, Colombia and the Santa Rosa wall are world-class: dramatic walls, 30-metre visibility, effortless drift diving. With a certification card, Cozumel deserves its own trip.
For snorkellers the gap almost disappears. Isla Mujeres sits on the same Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest on Earth: healthy coral heads, rays, turtles and the MUSA underwater museum, all in calm, shallow water that suits children and mixed groups better than open-ocean drift sites — and you reach it without giving half the day to the highway.
Beaches
Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is routinely ranked among the best beaches in Mexico and the Caribbean: waist-deep, bath-warm water a hundred metres out, powder sand, palms, and bars where your feet stay in the water. Cozumel’s beaches are pleasant, but nobody flies home talking about them. If the picture in your head is beach, Isla Mujeres wins easily.

From Cancún, Isla Mujeres is the practical day trip: minutes away instead of hours, better beaches, snorkelling that satisfies everyone but hardcore divers, and logistics simple enough for a group of fifteen. Cozumel is the right call when diving is the point and you can give it more than a day.

The Playa del Carmen–Cozumel crossing is open water and can be choppy, especially on windy winter days; take a tablet if you are prone to seasickness. The Cancún–Isla Mujeres channel is generally calmer.
