Private Yacht Charter Cancún:
The Complete 2025 Guide

By Zamá Charters · 8 min read · Updated March 2025

Cancún sits on the edge of one of the most extraordinary bodies of water in the world. The Caribbean here runs from deep cobalt blue to translucent turquoise in a matter of meters, and the only way to experience it properly — away from the crowded beach clubs and tourist catamarans — is from the deck of a private yacht.

This guide covers everything you need to know before booking: what a private charter actually includes, how much it costs, which vessel is right for your group, when to go, and what questions to ask before handing over a deposit.

What Is a Private Yacht Charter in Cancún?

A private yacht charter means the entire boat is reserved exclusively for your group — no other guests, no shared schedule, no strangers. You set the pace. You choose where to anchor. You decide when you want to swim and when you want to leave.

This is fundamentally different from a group catamaran tour, which packs 40–80 people onto a boat with a fixed itinerary, scheduled stops, and a buffet lunch you share with people you've never met. A private charter costs more per ticket on paper, but when you split it across a group of 10–15 people, the price per person is often lower — and the experience is incomparable.

Quick math: A shared catamaran tour runs $80–120 per person for 10 guests = $800–1,200. A private yacht charter for the same 10 guests runs $1,150 total = $115 per person — with an exclusive boat, open drinks, snorkel gear, and a vetted crew.

What's Included in a Cancún Yacht Charter

The inclusions vary between operators, so always confirm before booking. At Zamá Charters, every Isla Mujeres Day Charter includes:

Add-ons like catering, an open bar upgrade, hotel transfers, decoration packages, and drone + GoPro content are available separately.

How Much Does a Yacht Charter in Cancún Cost?

Cancún yacht charter pricing depends on three variables: vessel size, duration, and the operator. Here's a realistic breakdown for 2025:

ExperienceDurationMax GuestsStarting Price
Isla Mujeres Day Charter6 hours15 guests$1,150
Sunset Dinner Cruise3 hours14 guests$900
Jet Ski Tour1 hourper ski$100/ski
Flyboard Experience30 minutesper person$90/person
Signature PackageFull day15 + skis$1,400

Be cautious of operators quoting significantly lower prices — this often means shared departures, older vessels, no crew certification, or aggressive add-on upselling at the marina.

Which Vessel Is Right for Your Group?

The two workhorses of the Cancún charter market are the Sea Ray Sundancer 440 and 455 — both motor yachts in the 44–46 foot range, capable of handling up to 15 guests comfortably.

Sea Ray 440 Sundancer

The 440 is the leaner of the two. Sleek profile, spacious cockpit, bow sun pad, and a full cabin with A/C below deck. It's our most popular vessel for the Isla Mujeres day charter — fast enough to make the crossing efficiently, stable enough for a comfortable afternoon at anchor.

Sea Ray 455 Sundancer

The 455 is the flagship. Extended swim platform, two private staterooms below deck, full salon with leather seating, and a master cabin with queen bed. If your group includes couples who want privacy, or if you're doing a special occasion charter, the 455 is the boat.

The Isla Mujeres Route: What to Expect

The standard day charter follows a well-established route that showcases the best of the Cancún Caribbean:

  1. 10:00am — Depart Puerto Juárez Marina, heading northeast toward Isla Mujeres
  2. 10:45am — Arrive at snorkel reef near the north tip of the island. Water clarity here is exceptional — visibility of 15–20 meters is common
  3. 11:30am — Anchor at Playa Norte, the island's main beach. Shallow turquoise water, white sand, beach clubs within walking distance
  4. 1:00pm — Lunch on board (or at a beach restaurant — your captain can recommend)
  5. 2:30pm — Return cruise, typically along the western side of the island
  6. 4:00pm — Return to marina

The captain adjusts the itinerary based on conditions, group preferences, and what you want to prioritize. If you want to spend more time snorkeling, you spend more time snorkeling.

Best Time to Book a Yacht Charter in Cancún

Cancún's peak charter season runs November through April. This is when the Caribbean is at its most photogenic — calm seas, consistent 28–30°C water temperatures, and the lowest chance of afternoon squalls.

December–March is the absolute peak. Snowbirds and winter escapees fill the hotels, and yacht charters book up weeks in advance. If you're traveling in this window, book at least 2–3 weeks ahead.

April–May is the sweet spot for value seekers. Prices are the same but availability is better, and the water is warm and clear.

June–October is hurricane season. Charters still operate — most days are beautiful — but you should have flexible travel insurance and understand that captains may cancel for weather. The upside: these are the least crowded months.

5 Questions to Ask Before Booking Any Cancún Charter

  1. Is the captain CONAPESCA certified? Mexican maritime law requires this for commercial passenger vessels. Always confirm.
  2. What's included in the base price? Drinks? Snorkel gear? Fuel? Marina fees? Get it in writing.
  3. What is your cancellation policy? A reputable operator offers free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure.
  4. Is this a private charter or shared departure? Some operators advertise "private" charters that are actually shared boats with other groups.
  5. Can I see photos of the actual vessel? Not stock photos — actual photos of the boat you'll be on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my own food and drinks?

Yes. The charter includes 24 waters, 24 sodas, and 24 beers as standard. You're welcome to bring additional food or drinks. For full catering and premium bar service, ask about our add-on packages when booking.

Is it safe for children?

Absolutely. We carry life jackets in all children's sizes and our captains are experienced with family groups. Snorkel gear is available in smaller sizes. Many of our best-reviewed charters are family day trips.

How far in advance should I book?

December through March: 2–3 weeks minimum. April through November: 5–7 days is usually sufficient, though weekend dates fill faster.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If the captain determines conditions are unsafe for the departure, you receive a full refund or a free reschedule. We never operate in unsafe sea states. Minor rain or clouds are not grounds for cancellation — the Caribbean weather clears fast.
